I finished Yuri Kuma Arashi on Sunday. With that, here's a bit of commentary on the final three episodes, followed by some thoughts on the series as a whole.

Spoilers for all of YKA; warning for mentions of the usual things about it )

I'm still willing to turn this series over in my head a bit more, and while I do have very mixed feelings about it and I can't see myself having too much fannish attachment to it, I can see myself revisiting this series sometime in the future.
mikogalatea: Masako from Mawaru Penguindrum, sipping a cup of tea while looking out of a window. ([Penguindrum] Masako)
After I'd first started watching it about five years ago and only gotten halfway through before wandering away from it, I've finally started Yuri Kuma Arashi again with the aim of finishing the whole show! I've now just finished episode 9.

For now, I don't have any further comments on the first six episodes to add to what I previously wrote about them, so here's my scattered thoughts on eps 7 to 9.

Spoilers for up to ep 9 of YKA, with relevant warnings (particularly for rape and murder) and some cranky feelings about a certain villain )

I'm intending to watch the last three episodes in the next few days, and this time I definitely won't wander off from it like I did before!

I also started rewatching Utena recently, which I think was long overdue, especially with it being one of my favourite anime series ever. That's what inspired me to restart and finish YKA now, actually. I'm considering rewatching Sarazanmai while I'm at it, too, as it's been a while since I was watching that while it aired and it's only 11 episodes.
mikogalatea: Saionji and Nanami from Revolutionary Girl Utena. She's found him camping at night and has dropped to her knees in dismay over a misunderstanding. ([Utena] Saionji and Nanami)
Better late than never, here's my thoughts on episodes 5 and 6 of Yuri Kuma Arashi.

Spoilers for those episodes, allusions to later things; warning for mentions of rape and murder )

I'm aiming to watch the rest of the series early next week.
mikogalatea: Nanami and Tsuwabuki from Revolutionary Girl Utena, sitting outdoors while talking pleasantly. ([Utena] Nanami and Tsuwabuki)
Managed to squeeze in a couple more episodes of YKA this morning before Funi went down for its scheduled maintenance... which takes me up to ep 4 now!

It's no spoiler that I'm continuing to like the OST. As for the rest...

Spoilers up to ep 4, allusions to later stuff )

Now I'm a third of the way through, my current verdict is that YKA is... okay. It's not one of the worst things I've ever seen, and it's not one of the best things I've ever seen. Will later episodes shake that up for me? We'll see, hopefully before too long.

At last! I have started to actually watch Yuri Kuma Arashi! And two episodes in, so far I... don't hate it!

I guess it goes to show what kind of impression I can get from something based on second-hand opinions. I couldn't watch YKA back when it was originally airing because Funimation didn't make its streaming services available to my country at the time, so everything I could know about it came from other people on my Tumblr dashboard and such -- so when I was hearing glowing praise as if Ikuhara can do wrong from some people, and scathing criticism of its noncon fanservice and other problems (which the fans seemed to love waving aside) from others, with basically no middle ground and everyone involved apparently having strong biases either which way, I couldn't help drawing some conclusions of my own and being put off. Because of that, even when the show did become available to the UK, I felt so pre-inclined to hate it that I could never bring myself to even try watching it to judge for myself.

Until now, that is! I almost certainly have Sarazanmai to thank for getting me to finally do this. >>;

My impressions so far:

Though I've only seen the first two eps so far, I'm pretty spoiled so later stuff will be alluded to; also, warning for mentions of rape and murder )

Since I haven't instantly dropped it, I'll definitely be watching the rest! Let's see what I make of later episodes...
